Dear Friend,

I am always looking for foods and food combinations that promote optimal health and well-being for midlife women. While researching foods that help balance women’s hormones I was reminded of the powers of flaxseed. Flaxseed is a superfood superstar when it comes to helping women balance hormones. If you are suffering from mood swings, low energy, or sudden weight gain you may have an estrogen imbalance and flaxseed can help.

Why Flaxseed is a Superfood

Flaxseed is an ancient nutrient and fiber-dense seed rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are a plant compound that can be key in helping women balance hormones because they mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Flaxseed is an estrogenic adaptogen: it has the unique ability to get rid of excess estrogen and stimulate estrogen production when you don’t have enough. Studies show flaxseed may

  • Reduce menopause symptoms like vaginal dryness, night sweats, and hot flashes.

  • Help reduce inflammation throughout the body.

  • Promote younger-looking skin by reducing inflammation and encouraging healthy cell growth.

  • Enhance heart health by lowering blood pressure, reducing inflammation, and improving cholesterol levels.

  • Support a healthy weight by promoting feelings of satiety and fullness

  • Improve digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and alleviating constipation.

How to add Flaxseed

To reap the benefits of flaxseed, consume two tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds daily. Buy organic whole flaxseed and store it in the refrigerator. You can use whole flaxseed in your smoothie and they’ll be ground in the smoothie process. You might also enjoy grinding them and then sprinkling them on avocado toast, salads, or roasted veggies, or stirred into plain full-fat organic grass-fed yogurt or oatmeal. If grinding them freshly before use is just too much trouble opt for high-quality organic ground flaxseed.

Achieving optimal health through nutrition involves eating a wide variety of whole foods. Adding supplemental “superfoods” may be a great way to add nutrients and fiber to your diet. Organic chia seeds, hemp hearts, spirulina, and flaxseeds are some of my favorites. If you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, or digestive issues like constipation consuming two tablespoons of ground flaxseed may help you feel better and get back on track.
