Amid the holiday hustle, sleep is often the first thing to slip. The season is a time of giving and prioritizing others, but I have learned that taking care of myself, especially my sleep- is key to having the energy and calm to show up for everything I want to do. Here's why sleep matters and how to optimize your rest this season. Prioritizing quality rest isn’t just self-care; it’s the foundation for managing stress, staying healthy, and feeling your best through the season’s demands.

Here are a few simple tips for better sleep and some of my favorite products to help you get through this busy time well-rested and ready for whatever comes your way

Why Sleep Is Key for Women Over 50

  1. Boosts Metabolism and Aids Weight Loss: Studies show that inadequate sleep disrupts hormones like ghrelin and leptin, which control hunger and fullness. Better sleep can help regulate these hormones, reducing cravings and supporting weight loss goals.

  2. Improves Mood and Stress Management: Deep sleep lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, and improves your resilience to daily stressors. It’s a natural mood enhancer, helping you feel calm and centered.

  3. Supports Hormonal Balance: Sleep is essential for balancing midlife hormones like estrogen and progesterone. Better balance means fewer hot flashes, improved energy, and more restful nights.

How to Start Sleeping Better Tonight

  1. Establish a Nighttime Routine: Create a calming pre-bed ritual like reading, journaling, stretching, or sipping herbal tea. Taking a warm Epsom salt bath or a warm shower can also signal your body it’s time to wind down. If you suffer nighttime hot flashes take a warm shower slowly cool the water hop out and get to bed.  

  2. Establish a Morning Ritual to Improve Sleep: Get up and get out! Looking toward the sun within the first hour of awakening can reset your circadian rhythm and help your brain recognize sleep and wake times. 

  3. Optimize Your Sleep Environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Investing in supportive sleep products can also make a big difference! 

I am sensitive to light and it’s hard for me to get my room dark enough. My sleep mask has made all the difference. I went from 10% deep sleep to 14% deep sleep.
