This week I had the pleasure of being a guest on The Sober Edge with Teri Patterson. Teri is an amazing woman who started her coaching business in midlife. She combines her knowledge of nutrition with her passion for living an alcohol-free life. Listen to this episode about aging gracefully, four pillars for increasing your health span, and optimizing your health in midlife.
The Sober Edge Episode 87
How old are you? How old do you feel? What do you think of when you hear the line “age is just a number”? I think it can be a tricky question.
For many of us, we feel younger on the inside than we look on the outside, we may feel and look younger than the age on our driver's license. We may see a photo of a high school friend and wonder “Why do they look so old?”! On the flip side, some of us may struggle with health issues as we age, or we may have come to believe that our aches and pains are just a sign of aging. We may be at the beginning of breaking up with alcohol and wondering if our bodies really will bounce back.
A concept that I like to embrace is the idea of ‘health span’ vs. ‘life span’. This refers to living to the end of our days with a quality of life that allows us to enjoy our ‘golden years’.
My podcast guest this week, Jacqui Garrison, is a certified health coach who helps women explore aging with grace. Jacqui lived her life believing she was healthy and creating good health by doing all the right things. It wasn’t until she was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and told ‘This is just your lot in life’ that she started to explore what health meant.
Jacqui realized that she had been naïve and under-educated about how to achieve optimal health. She set out to explore how to heal her body and along the way decided to share this new-found knowledge with others. Jacqui now believes that good health means living with the ability to move your body, the ability to recover quickly, and play hard at any age!
In our conversation, Jacqui shares the 4 key pillars to aging gracefully: sleep, nutrition, mindfulness, and movement. She also shares a few of her favorite mindfulness practices and her favorite meditation for falling asleep. Jacqui’s training and philosophy are so similar to my own that we share a chuckle about being the rare breed of nutritionists who don’t tell our clients what to eat but instead empower you to learn what fuels your body the old-fashioned way - through trial and observation!
Jacqui shines when it comes to helping women get through menopause feeling lighter and brighter. She believes that women in midlife can embrace this season with a new-found excitement about what’s next vs. now what?
